Social Media at Glenview
- Never post images of children without their caregiver’s consent.
Glenview has the fun presence on Instagram and Facebook that you’d expect from a community-oriented school like ours. Our accounts showcase student events, projects, and achievements, send helpful reminders, recognize our staff, and generally keep us in touch.
Following
All families are welcome to follow our accounts. But if you choose not to, that’s OK, too! Any important reminders posted on social media are also covered in the weekly school newsletter, the Grapevine, which is shared on ParentSquare and Konstella.
Posting
Posting on social media, or giving permission to post your child’s image, is an individual choice for each family. This is important to keep in mind not only when considering whether your family will participate in social media, but also when taking any photos or videos at school.
Opting out of social media
No family at Glenview is required to have their child’s image shared on our social media accounts. If you don’t want your child to participate in Glenview or OUSD social media, you can opt out at any time:
-
- Log in to the Aeries parent portal
- Click on Student Info
- Click on Data Confirmation
- Go to Authorizations, where you’ll find a checkbox, accompanied by this description:
Student Image / Schoolwork: If you approve of your school and/or the District sharing your student’s image, voice, schoolwork, and/or artwork in our publications to highlight student success, please check the box. The District often highlights the work of our students in published materials such as yearbooks, school websites, social media accounts, and the OUSD website.
Photos/videos of other people’s children: Never post images of children without their caregiver’s consent. Glenview regularly hosts large events, including assemblies, carnivals, concerts, and more. At any school-sponsored event, it’s easy to take pictures and videos involving more than one child, but you may not share these on social media without permission. If you know the families of children in a photo/video, ask them before posting. If you don’t have permission, don’t share it.
Sharing your photos: If you have a public account and would like us to share your photo or video on the Glenview Elementary accounts, you can tag us: #glenviewelementaryoaklandca. Tagging us is a request/permission to repost on the Glenview Elementary accounts, so please don’t use the tag if you don’t want your image shared or don’t have permission from the caregivers of every child in the content you’re sharing. You can also send us your photos via Direct Message.
Best practices: Some kids love the spotlight, but some don’t, and studies have shown that social media exposure can actually contribute to a negative self image in some cases. Our kids’ feelings about this can evolve over time, as well, so we encourage all families to have an ongoing dialogue with their children on this topic. There is also more great information from Common Sense Media to help inform your family’s social media choices.
